2012: End or Beginning?

Disaster scenarios for 2012 are well-known, but many New Agers believe that year will mark a global shift in consciousness.

There are a variety of popular beliefs about the year 2012. These beliefs range from the spiritually transformative to the apocalyptic, and center upon various interpretations of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. Contemporary scientists have disputed the apocalyptic versions.

The movie called '2012' was a 2009 science fiction disaster film. It starred John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, Thandie Newton, Danny Glover, Woody Harrelson, and others. The film briefly references Mayanism, the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, and the 2012 phenomenon in its portrayal of cataclysmic events unfolding in 2012.

A New interpretation of this transition time suggests that during this era the Earth and its people may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation, and that 2012 may mark the beginning of a new era.

2012 and 2035

The year 2035 is a significant one, according to Sri Bhagavan and the Oneness Movement. In a Skype conference with Sri Bhagavan in 2009, he said the O.M. will enter a new phase of growth in 2035.

A question was asked this way: “On one hand there is global warming, economic crisis, industrialization, etc., and on other hand there is spiritual growth happening towards the run up to the age of enlightenment. How should we prepare ourselves and what changes are we going to see in world?”

The answer went like this: “The preparation/conception for the age to enlightenment started in 1989 by many spiritual movements. And 2012 will be the birth of the new age which will grow in 2035. There will be difficulties and disorder during this phase before 2012 which in turn will bring about a greater order. In 2012 a large number of people will change perceptions. The world will slowly move into order."

Mayanism and The New Age

Many claims and predictions about 2012 are based on a form of Mayanism, which is a collection of New Age beliefs about ancient Mayan spirituality. In 1975, the ending of the b'ak'tun cycle became the subject of speculation by several New Age authors, who believe it will correspond to a global "consciousness shift".

In his book Mexico Mystique: The Coming Sixth Age of Consciousness, Frank Waters tied Coe's December 24, 2011 date to astrology and the prophecies of the Hopi, while both José Argüelles and Terence McKenna, in their books 'The Transformative Vision' and 'The Invisible Landscape', respectively discussed the significance of the year 2012, but not a specific day.

In 2006, author Daniel Pinchbeck popularised New Age concepts about this date in his book '2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl', linking it to beliefs about crop circles, alien abduction, and personal revelations based on the use of entheogens and mediumship. Pinchbeck claims to discern a "growing realization that materialism and the rational, empirical worldview that comes with it has reached its expiration date... we're on the verge of transitioning to a dispensation of consciousness that's more intuitive, mystical and shamanic."

In the United States, the association of December 21, 2012 with a "transformation of consciousness" has also received popular attention in 'The Lost Symbol', a bestseller work of thriller fiction by Dan Brown.

Sri Bhagavan On 2012

“February to October 2011 are the most important times in Oneness, Sri Bhagavan said. He is the leader of the Oneness Movement, out of Oneness University, in India. He says we are in the 11th phase of this phenomenon right now. It was conceived in 1989 and we are still feeling the effects of those events, like the Berlin wall coming down.

“Towards the end of 2011 this ‘Oneness Baby’ will be delivered, the birth of the new age,” he says. “In Indian prophecy we actually speak of 2011, but because the world mainly knows 2012, I also sing the song of 2012. And all this actually began in around 3001 or 3002 BC; and with the Mayan Calendar they mention 2012 AD.

Sri Bhagavan’s Oneness Movement

Sri Bhagavan claims, “Some will see more harmony in families and there are also others who say they felt nothing at all and that nothing has happened. But in Indian culture when one knows that someone is going to die tomorrow, we bless them and say: ‘You will live 100 years’. So we have to say: ‘You will all awaken’, because anything else would be not be accepted and anything else would be considered inauspicious. But in the West you require exactness.”

He says the Awakened state is different from Enlightened state, there are some who are also getting Enlightened, and after 2011, your job does not end. Another serious phase begins. This baby that was conceived in 1989, will be born in 2012, and should start walking by 2035, when actually the majority of people will be Awakened and Enlightened.

He also says, “So by 2035 there should be no poverty in the world and the physical environment will also change.”
